SEWANEE, Tenn. 4/11/09 – The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels, behind strong pitching, swept an SCAC baseball doubleheader from the Sewanee Tigers today at Montgomery Field in Sewanee. Oglethorpe took the first game in a pitcher's duel 2-1 and ran away from the Tigers in the nightcap 11-1.
In the first game, Greg Bartleski (Charlottesville, Va., Covenant) pitched a complete game, but came up the hard-luck loser as Oglethorpe defeated the Tigers 2-1. Bartleski scattered four hits and struck out 12.
Sewanee struck first with two outs in the bottom of the third inning when Taylor Irwin (Brentwood, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy) singled home Taylor Burns (Dallas, Tex., Lake Highlands) to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Burns had doubled to deep left field.
In the top of the seventh inning, Oglethorpe pushed two runs across the plate on two hits to take a 2-1 lead.
Sewanee outhit the Petrels 8-4. Both teams played errorless baseball.
Burns went 2-for-4 and Irwin was 2-for-3 to lead the Tigers at the plate.
Sean Tuttle picked up the win for the Stormy Petrels. Daniel Sarisky worked the final 2.2 innings to record the save.
In Game 2, starting pitcher John Hale went the distance for Oglethorpe in a 11-1 win over the Tigers.
Sewanee picked up its only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Taylor Barrett (Murfreesboro, Tenn., Siegel) reached first base on an error by the shortstop to lead off the inning. Barrett advanced to second on a fielder's choice and scored on a single by Irwin.
Oglethorpe scored eleven unanswered runs over the next eight innings to post the 11-1 victory.
Losing pitcher Logan Ray (Estill Springs, Tenn., Franklin County) started the game and lasted five innings giving up seven runs, none of which were earned. He was relieved by Chris Mauro (Washington, D.C., St. Alban's) and Pete Anderson (Jacksonville, Fla. , Episcopal).
Oglethorpe outhit the Tigers 15-6. Sewanee committed five costly errors.
Irwin led the offensive attack with three hits. Franklin Pogue (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan), Joe Reilly (Milton, Ga., Mt. Pisgah) and Bryant Denison (Baton Rouge, La., University) each had a hit for Sewanee.
Sewanee drops to 8-17 on the season and 2-10 in SCAC play. Oglethorpe is now 19-12 overall and 4-4 in conference action.
The two teams will wrap up the three game SCAC series on Monday afternoon with a single game scheduled for 2 p.m.
