SEWANEE, Tenn. 3/28/09 – The DePauw Tigers scored nine runs over the final two innings to thwart a late Sewanee rally as the Tigers from Greencastle, Ind. defeated the Tigers from Sewanee by the score of 23-11 today in SCAC play at Montgomery Field.
DePauw roughed up Sewanee pitching to take a commanding 14-2 lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning.
In the Sewanee half of the seventh inning, the Tigers erupted for nine runs to cut the DePauw lead to 14-11. The inning was highlighted by a towering grand slam homerun off the left field scoreboard by freshman right fielder Taylor Barrett (Murfreesboro, Tenn., Siegel).
The three-run deficit was as close as Sewanee would get as DePauw closed the door on the Sewanee rally with five runs in the eighth and four runs in the ninth to make the final score 23-11.
Sewanee starting pitcher Greg Bartleski (Charlottesville, Va., Covenant)was charged with the loss on the mound. Bartleski surrendered ten earned runs on 12 hits.
Hobs Donovan picked up the win for DePauw.
DePauw outhit Sewanee 23-14 for the game.
Sewanee was led at the plate by Barrett who went 3-for-5 with four RBI. Taylor Burns (Dallas, Tex., Lake Highlands), Taylor Irwin (Brentwood, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy), Franklin Pogue (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) and Rascoe Dean (Nashville, Tenn., Montgomery Bell Academy) all had two hits each. Dean picked up two RBI.
Sewanee falls to 6-13 on the season and 0-5 in SCAC action. DePauw raises its record to 13-8 and 4-1 in conference play.
The Tigers and the Tigers will wrap up the three-game series tomorrow with a single game schedule for 1 p.m.
