SEWANEE, Tenn. 3/27/09 – DePauw hitters blasted four homeruns and winning pitcher Brad Gerlach struck out nine as the Tigers dumped the Sewanee Tigers 10-6 in SCAC baseball play today at Montgomery Field.
Sewanee jumped to a quick lead as the Tigers pushed three runs across the plate on four hits in the bottom of the first inning.
DePauw responded with nine unanswered runs over the next five innings to take a commanding 9-3 lead. The DePauw hitters led off the second, third, fourth and fifth innings with solo homeruns.
Sewanee rallied for two runs in the bottom the ninth, but it wasn't enough as DePauw escaped with the 10-6 victory.
Chris Mauro (Washington, D.C., St. Alban's) pitched five innings for Sewanee and was tagged with the loss. Mauro allowed eight earned runs on ten hits. Andrew Rowan (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) pitched the final four innings giving up no earned runs.
DePauw outhit Sewanee 14-11.
Franklin Pogue (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) and Joe Reilly (Milton, Ga., Mt. Pisgah) each picked up three hits for Sewanee. Pogue drove in three runs. Taylor Irwin (Brentwood, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy) chipped in two hits and an RBI.
Sewanee falls to 6-12 overall and 0-4 in SCAC play. DePauw improves to 12-8 overall and 3-1 in the SCAC.
The conference series continues tomorrow with the game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
