AUBURNDALE, Fla. 3/19/09 - Fontbonne University defeated Sewanee 12-7 in D-3 baseball action today in Auburndale, Fla.
Sewanee held a 4-1 lead through two full innings, but the Griffins scored six runs in the top of the third to take a 7-4 lead. The teams traded runs for the remainder of the game with Fontbonne holding on to top the Tigers 12-7.
Wilson Nealy (Nashville, Tenn., Montgomery Bell Academy) was tagged with the loss for Sewanee lasting only three innings allowing seven earned runs on ten hits. Andrew Rowan (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) and Tyler Merck (Far Hills, N.J., Gill St. Bernard's) pitched in relief of Nealey.
Sewanee was outhit by the Griffins 14-7.
Trey Axe (Austin, Tex., St. Andrew's) picked up two hits, including a double and two RBI for the Tigers. Austin Stephenson (Charlotte, N.C., Providence) also contributed two hits. Taylor Barrett (Murfreesboro, Tenn., Siegel) had one hit and drove in three runs.
Sewanee's record drops to 5-10 on the season. The Tigers will continue play in the RussMatt Invitational tomorrow when they face Franklin and Marshall at 9 a.m. in Winter Haven, Fla.
