WINTER HAVEN, Fla. 3/17/09 – The Sewanee Tigers were defeated by Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts by the score of 9-6 today at the RussMatt Invitational in Winter Haven, Fla.
The Trailblazers built their lead to 8-1 by scoring four runs in the top of the seventh inning. The Tigers closed the gap to 8-6 with a five-run eighth inning, but that was as close as Sewanee would get. M.C.L.A. added an insurance run in their half of the ninth to make the final score 9-6.
Greg Bartleski (Charlottesville, Va., Covenant) worked 6.2 innings and was charged with the loss allowing four earned runs on eight hits, striking out four and issuing four walks. Andrew Rowan (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) and Peter Burd (Concord, Mass., Hotchkiss) worked in relief of Bartleski.
Scott Willis (Columbia, S.C., Heathwood Hall) led the Tigers at the plate with a double that drove in two runs.
The Trailblazers outhit Sewanee 11-6. The Tigers committed three errors that led to four unearned runs.
Sewanee's record drops to 4-9 on the season.
The Tigers will continue RussMatt action tomorrow as they square off with Hamilton College at 11:30 a.m. at Chain O' Lakes Park in Winter Haven.
