WINTER HAVEN, Fla. 3/16/09 – Sophomore Chris Mauro (Washington, D.C., St. Alban's) pitched a complete seven-inning game and the Tiger bats exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to propel Sewanee to a 12-2 win over Framingham State in Russ-Matt Invitational baseball action today in Winter Haven, Fla.
The win was the 106th career win at Sewanee for veteran baseball coach Scott Baker tying him for the top spot on the all-time win list with Shirley Majors.
Mauro allowed no earned runs and only four hits in his complete game effort. The game was called after the seventh inning because of the 10-run mercy rule.
Sewanee outhit the Rams 12-4.
The Tigers were led at the plate by Taylor Irwin (Brentwood, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy) who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and 2 RBI. Taylor Barrett (Murfreesboro, Tenn., Siegel), Franklin Pogue (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) and Trey Axe (Austin, Tex., St. Andrew's) all had two hits in the game. Axe contributed three RBI.
The Tigers are now 2-0 on the Florida spring break trip and 4-8 overall.
Action continues for Sewanee tomorrow at the Russ-Matt Invitational as the Tigers play Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at 2:45 pm.
