BIRMINGHAM, Ala. 3/12/09 – The Birmingham Southern Panthers swept a doubleheader from the Sewanee Tigers in SCAC baseball action tonight. The Panthers took the first game 13-3 and the nightcap by the score of 14-3.
In Game 1, Sewanee fell behind early as Birmingham Southern put up four runs in the first, one run in the third and four runs in the fourth to take a 9-0 lead.
The Tigers were able to scratch out two runs in the fifth and one run in the seventh, but it wouldn't be enough as the Panthers took the 13-3 win.
Taylor Barrett (Murfreesboro, Tenn., Siegel) went 2-4 with two RBI and Joe Reilly (Milton, Ga., Mt. Pisgah) was 2-3 to lead Sewanee at the plate.
Tyler Merck (Far Hills, N.J., Gill St. Bernard's) was the losing pitcher going 5.1 innings allowing 11 earned runs on 11 hits. Clay Malcolm picked up the win on the mound for Birmingham Southern
In the second game of the doubleheader the Panthers used a nine-run sixth inning to race to a 14-3 win over Sewanee.
The Tigers got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning as Taylor Irwin (Brentwood, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy) led off the game with a solo homerun.
Sewanee struck again in the top of the second when Irwin singled home Bryant Denison (Baton Rouge, La., University) who had reached base on an error by the shortstop to take a 2-0 lead.
Birmingham Southern picked up two runs in the bottom of the fifth off Tiger starter Greg Bartleski (Charlottesville, Va., Covenant) to knot the score at two runs apiece.
The Panthers opened up an 11-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth when they sent 14 batters to the plate scoring nine runs on eight hits chasing Bartleski from the game. Andrew Rowan (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) came on in relief of Bartleski.
The Tigers were able to push a single run across the plate in the top of the eighth inning to cut into the lead, but Birmingham Southern responded with a three-run eighth to make the final score 14-3.
The Panthers outhit the Tigers 14-9 for the game. Sewanee was led at the plate by Irwin and Barrett, who each picked up two hits. Irwin drove in two runs.
Bartleski was tagged with the loss giving up seven earned runs on eight hits. Richard Vance was the winning pitcher.
Sewanee falls to 2-7 on the season and 0-2 in SCAC play. Birmingham Southern upped its record to 13-3 and 2-0 in the SCAC.
The Tigers and the Panthers will wrap up the series on Friday with a single game scheduled for 4 pm.
