SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Sewanee men's basketball team is hosting the 14 annual Lon Varnell Classic this weekend on the Mountain and in game one, Rust topped the host Tigers 74-67 after leading by 11 at the half. Rust led by as much as 21 in the second half, but Sewanee rallied, pulling within seven as time ran out.
Zack Mulligan (Lynchburg, Va., VES) led Sewanee with 15 points. Andrew Little (Charlotte, N. C., Southlake Christian) and Tyler Brown (Goodlettsville, Tenn., Beech) each had 14 points, while Tony Marelle (Atlanta, Ga., Mt. Pisgah) was also in double digits with 10. Markeith Wilson and Larry Veasley led the Bearcats with 15 points apiece. Rust also had a 47-40 edge in field goal percentage.
Sewanee is now 3-5 and will play Huntingdon tomorrow at 3 pm. Rust is 5-7 so far this year and will play Guilford tomorrow at 1 pm.
