MEMPHIS – Sewanee rounded out a weekend of basketball on Sunday with a 75-64 win over SCAC and in-state rival Rhodes College. Franklin native
Ben Pursell (BGA) logged 15 points in the contest, taking his career total over the 1,000 point milestone. Pursell currently has 1,003 points – good for 21st place all-time for Sewanee and one of only 73 in SCAC history to hit the 1,000 mark.
In the first half, Sewanee out-rebounded the Lynx 21-11, which kept the Tigers in the game for a 35-34 deficit at the break. The Tigers jumped out in the second, taking control early and hanging on for the 11-point win.
Bradley Pierson (Rome, Ga., Darlington) led the Sewanee scoring drive with 23 points and fellow senior
Kenton Coleman (Ridgetop, Tenn., Greenbrier) was also in double digits with 18 points. Pursell led the Tigers with 16 points, securing a double-double effort. Cory Smith led Rhodes with 17 points.
Sewanee was 44% good from the field for the game and Rhodes hit 41% of its field goals. The Tigers were also 33% accurate from behind the three-point line, while Rhodes only hit 22% of its three-pointers. The Tigers cleaned up the glass, grabbing 40 rebounds compared to 24 for Rhodes.
Sewanee is now 3-8 and will play at Oglethorpe next weekend.
