2008 Football: Sewanee D Picks Off Seven in SCAC Win

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The story of the day Saturday was Sewanee's seven interceptions and Chalankis Brown's school record-matching four picks as Sewanee shut out Colorado College 19-0 on the Mountain. Football alum Frank Greer, C'93 holds the record with Brown, a native of Millbrook, Ala.

Andrew Gould (Chatsworth, Ga.) started the scoring for Sewanee in the first quarter with a field goal to get the home Tigers out to a 3-0 lead. Defensive back Stuart Rast (Hapeville, Ga.) also highlighted the Sewanee first quarter effort with a pair of interceptions and 50 yards worth of return yardage. Trey Reliford (Strawberry Plains, Tenn.) gave the Tigers a little insurance in the second quarter with a two-yard touchdown run to take the Sewanee lead to 9-0 for the halftime break. Reliford has 288 yards in three games so far this year.

In the second half, the Sewanee defense turned the screws, grabbing five more interceptions and Reliford and Gould each making another scoring notch on his belt as the Gould field goal and Reliford TD secured the 19-0 score in favor of Sewanee. Gould is 6/7 so far this year in field goal attempts. Geoff Marolda (Houston) highlighted the other end of the special teams effort with seven punts for 307 yards and a long of 56.

Defensively, Brown had four picks, seven tackles, two tackles for a loss and 64 yards of interception return yardage. Rast had two interceptions and four tackles. Newcomer Braxton Redeagle (Pawhuska, Okla.) had Sewanee's other interception and returned it 42 yards on the play. He also had two tackles. Senior captain Tyler Brantley (Danielsville, Ga.) led Sewanee's tackling effort with eight. Josh Underwood led Colorado College with 11 tackles.

"We told our players that we wanted them to define who they are with this game. I wanted a dominant defense and to control the ball offensively.  In a game of field position, we played the chess match perfectly, despite some penalties," said Sewanee coach Robert Black after the game.

Sewanee in now 2-1 and is 1-0 in the SCAC. The Tigers will face DePauw in Greencastle, Indiana next Saturday. Colorado College is 0-2 and 0-1 in the SCAC.
