W&L Topples Sewanee on the Mountain

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Washington and Lee came to the Mountain today to square off against the host Sewanee Tigers in a battle between two rival teams that first played each other in 1892 (Sewanee won 22-16 on that occasion). The Generals got up on Sewanee 24-6 and Sewanee's late charge only gave the Tigers six more points, securing the final score of 24-12.

Washington and Lee jumped out to an early start three minutes in with a Tommy Kennedy 30-yard field goal. Sewanee answered seven minutes later in the first with an Andrew Gould (Chatsworth, Ga., Murray County)  kick through the uprights to even the score at three apiece.

Sewanee took a slight edge on the Generals early in the second quarter on another Gould kick, but W&L quarterback Charlie Westfal ran into the end zone just before the half to give Washington and Lee a slight 10-6 advantage going into intermission.

In the second half, W&L came on strong, eventually bringing its lead to 24-6. With just three minutes left, Sewanee began a late rally that would earn the Tigers a touchdown and then nearly another, but time ran out before the Tigers could finish. Newcomer Jacob Adams (Augusta, Ga., Richmond Academy)caught a 33-yard TD pass from Sewanee QB Patrick Shelton (Hickory, N.C., Hickory)to bring the score to 24-12. Sewanee drove into W&L territory late, but time ran out with Sewanee on the W&L one-yard line.

Sewanee had 335 yards compared to W&L's 269 total yards on the day, while the Tigers earned 22 first downs compared to the General mark of 17. Sewanee quarterback Shelton led in both rushing and passing with 44 and 198 yards, respectively. Stu Sitterson led the General offense with 106 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Defensively, Clayton Harrison (Ringgold, Ga., Ridgeland) and newcomer Alfonza Knight (Nashville, Tenn., M.B.A.)led Sewanee's effort with nine tackles each. Chalankis Brown (Millbrook, Ala., Stanhope Elmore)and newcomer Braxton Redeagle (Pawhuska, Okla., Holland Hall)each had an interception on the day, also. Three Generals had six tackles on the day.

Sewanee falls to 1-1, while Washington and Lee is also 1-1 after today. The Tigers will host SCAC foe Colorado College next weekend on the Mountain.
