DANVILLE, Ky. – Sewanee claimed its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Title on Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Centre in the championship match. The victory marks eight straight wins for the Tigers. Other highlights for the 2008 Tigers are
Clarkie Crawford's (Louisville, Ky., Collegiate) conference-leading 123 saves on the year and
Lynn Hancock's (Paris, Ky., Foxcroft) 16 goals – good to tie the Sewanee single-season record and the top-scoring effort in the league in 2008.
After a scoreless first half in Danville,
Caroline Carlin (Gladwyne, Penn., Country Day) scored Sewanee's goal off of a penalty corner to get the game-winner for the Tigers. Sewanee took 12 shots on the day, while Centre had 15. Crawford had four saves on the day and earned the shutout in goal. Patty Cowley had five saves for Centre.
“The team has come a long way this season. The players have really come together as a team and I am so proud of everyone. This weekend was a good demonstration of our heart and throughout the weekend, we kept playing better and better. The team deserved the win after how well they have been playing,” said first year Sewanee coach Jen Baldaccini.
The Tigers finish 2008 at 14-6, the best yearly record for Sewanee in a decade and only the third time in Sewanee's 33-year field hockey history that the Tigers have won 14 games.
