DANVILLE, Ky. –
Lynn Hancock (Paris, Ky., Foxcroft) scored Sewanee's first goal of the day today in the semifinals of the SCAC Championships in Danville today to tie the Sewanee all-time single-season record for goals scored (16). Sewanee eventually pulled out the win over \#1 seed DePauw 3-2 to advance to the SCAC championships tomorrow.
Hancock's mark of 16 goals in 2008 so far not only ties the Sewanee record, but leads the league this year. Sewanee Residential Life Director Nicky Campbell Hamilton set the original 16-goal record in 1998. “I am ecstatic about our win over DePauw today and my goal was yet again the result of a great team effort,” said Hancock after the game.
After the halftime break, DePauw go two quick goals to go ahead 2-1 before senior
Claiborne Buckingham (Richmond, Va., Collegiate) and
Caroline Carlin (Gladwyne, Penn., Country Day) scored to give Sewanee the 3-2 final edge. Buckingham has been selected to represent Sewanee in the 2008 NFHCA All-Star Team.
DePauw outshot Sewanee 26-12, but Sewanee made them count, connecting with the back of the net on a quarter of them. Sewanee senior goalie
Clarkie Crawford (Louisville, Ky., Collegiate) logged three saves on the day to take her SCAC-leading tally to 119.
Sewanee is currently 13-4. This is the first time since 1999 since the Tigers have won 13 games in a single season. They will face the winner of the Centre-Rhodes game tomorrow for the conference Championship.
