Men's Basketball Falls to Miss. College

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sunday marked day three of the 14th annual 2008 Lon Varnell Classic, hosted by Sewanee, and the host Tigers fell 82-76 in a close battle that changed leads numerous times. The score was deadlocked at 41 for the halftime break.

Sewanee jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the start with a Kenton Coleman (Ridgetop, Tenn., Greenbrier) three-pointer and the battle ensued with first half outcome being a 41-41 tie. In the first, Coleman was in double digits with 10 points to lead the Tigers.

In the second, Mississippi College pulled away from Sewanee, leading by as much as 14. The Tigers closed the gap, though, and brought the total to within four points late in the half. The Choctaws stopped the Sewanee rally short and ended up with the six-point lead to finish the contest. Coleman ended with a season and career high 19 points, while fellow seniors Ben Pursell (Franklin, Tenn., BGA), Casey Berry (Naples, Fla., Community School) and Bradley Pierson (Rome, Ga., Darlington) were all in double digits as well. Pierson has 72 points so far in 2008 - good for an 18 ppg average.He was tied for third in the SCAC in points per game before Sunday's play.

Sewanee was better than 50% for the game from the field, knocking down 24 of 47 shots. Mississippi College was 46.6% accurate, hitting 27 of 58 field goals. Sewanee was 7-19 in three pointers and 21-29 in free throws. Mississippi hit 7 of 21 threes and was only 68% good from the line with 21 of 30 free throws made.

Sewanee falls to 0-4 and will travel to LaGrange Tuesday night before hosting Otterbein at home on December 2. Mississippi College is 2-0.
