SEWANEE, Tenn. – This weekend marks the 14th annual Lon
Varnell Classic, hosted by Sewanee and the host Tigers fell 77-66
to Rust College Friday after trailing 46-35 at the half.
Rust jumped out to a 19-point lead early, but Sewanee rallied to
within three points late in the second. The Bearcats regained
control, though, and increased their lead to 11 for the halftime
intermission. Sewanee senior Bradley Pierson (Rome, Ga.,
Darlington) led the Sewanee first half effort with 17 points,
while fellow senior Ben Pursell (Franklin, Tenn./BGA)
had 10 in the first. Jerhell Holmes led Rust with
11 first half points.
In the second, Rust continued to control the game, with the
closest Sewanee rally being eight points short. The Bearcats led by
as much as 18, but Sewanee cut their lead to 11 for the final 77-66
tally. Pierson had a game high 26 points, knocking down eight
three-pointers of 16 attempted for a career high. In three games
this season, Pierson has 55 points. Pursell had 21 points and led
Sewanee with seven rebounds, coming off of a sidelining back injury
last weekend. Holmes had 21 points for Rust, while Keenan
Hardy logged a double-double with 18 points and 11
rebounds.
Sewanee was 23-55 from the field (41.8%) and Rust hit 45.5% of its
field goals. Sewanee was 11-30 in three-pointers and Rust was 7-20.
Rust committed 18 fouls, while Sewanee had 15. Sewanee falls to 0-3
and will face Mississippi College on Sunday. Rust will face
Mississippi College on Saturday for a 1 pm tip-off. For live stats
