SEWANEE, Tenn. – It was a cold, soggy day on the Mountain and Sewanee and Rhodes faced off in the annual Orgill Cup game, in which the Lynx of Rhodes took the trophy with a 17-0 shutout of the host Tigers. This is 76th meeting of the two teams and Sewanee leads the series 41-32-3.
After a scoreless first quarter, Tom Oliver picked off a Patrick Shelton pass and returned it 32 yards to give Rhodes a 7-0 lead (Justin Egger PAT) to go into the halftime break a touchdown ahead of the host Tigers.
In the second half, Rhodes freshman QB Brett Stoots connected with Matt Gilbert on a 16-yard touchdown pass to give Rhodes the 14-0 third quarter lead. In the fourth quarter, Egger wrapped up Rhodes' scoring with a 26 yard field goal to lock in the 17-0 final score in favor of Rhodes.
Rhodes gained 16 first downs, compared to nine for the Tigers. The Lynx had 331 total yards, while Sewanee had 187.
Ben Cleveland (Ft. Worth, Texas, Trinity Valley School) led Sewanee's ground effort with 35 yards rushing. Charles Hoggard had 170 yards on the ground for Rhodes.
Patrick Shelton (Hickory, N.C., Hickory) completed 15 passes for Sewanee for 98 yards, while Stoots completed five for 57 yards.
Defensively, senior
Tyler Brantley (Danielsville, Ga., Athens Academy) and newcomer
Alfonza Knight (Nashville, Tenn., M.B.A.) each had eight tackles on the day to lead Sewanee, while Mason Mosby had 10 tackles.
Chalankis Brown (Millbrook, Ala., Stanhope Elmore) had three tackles and blocked two kicks on the day for Sewanee as well.
The 2008 Tiger seniors were honored before the game for today's senior day. Honorees were
