SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Sewanee hosted \#18 Emory on Saturday in front of a homecoming weekend crowd and after going up 1-0 in the first half, secured the eventual 2-1 win over the visiting Eagles. This is the second time this year that Sewanee has beat a team that is ranked in the top 20 nationally. The Tigers beat then \#12 Rhodes earlier this fall in SCAC action.
After nearly 30 scoreless minutes,
Allison Davis (Carbondale, Ill., Carbondale) scored in the 29th minute to give Sewanee a narrow 1-0 lead that would last until the second half.
In the 55th minute, Whitney Briggs tied it up for the Eagles, who were looking to pick up a road win. Sewanee Newcomer
Faith Spencer (New York, N.Y., Hotchkiss) got the game-winner for the Tigers in the 81st minute and secured the 2-1 win for Sewanee with just nine minutes left in regulation.
Emory outshot Sewanee 20-6, bu the Tigers made them count, connecting a third of their shots with the back of the net. Freshman
Virginia Zakas (Atlanta, Ga., Westminster) earned the win in goal for the Tigers and had seven saves. Sarah Wilkerson had one save and allowed two goals for Emory.
Sewanee is 8-4-1 and will play Birmingham-Southern and Millsaps on the road next weekend before hosting Dallas and Austin College the following weekend to wrapup the 2008 season.
