About the Lon Varnell Classic
Starting in 1995, the University of the South is 32-12 in Lon Varnell Classic games and has been a part of the men's basketball schedule for 22 seasons.
Named after the winningest men’s basketball coach at the University of the South, Lon Varnell (1913-1991) coached the program from 1949 to 1970.
Varnell was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 1973 and the Sewanee Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004 as a part of its inaugural class.
