Tigers fall to No. 20 Centre, sweep Berea in tri-match

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SEWANEE, Tenn. – Savannah Gann recorded 18 kills across two matches, while Sophia Caruso collected 20 digs, as Sewanee split its matches Saturday at the Centre Tri-Match. The Tigers fell to No. 20 Centre in three sets in their SAA opener before sweeping Berea in non-conference action.

Against Centre, Gann and Suna Merkler led the Tigers with eight kills apiece. Jordan Krise recorded 13 assists, while Caruso paced the defense with 10 digs. Maria Kennedy hit .250, while Anna Ellison and Jane McAuley each recorded two blocks.

Centre took an early lead in the opening set and held off the Tigers, 25-17. Sewanee battled back in the second set, tying the score at 16 on a Centre attacking error, but the Colonels closed the frame on a 9-2 run to take a 2-0 lead.

The Tigers kept the third set close throughout, with Gann and Merkler combining for six kills. Sewanee pulled within two at 23-21 on Gann's final kill of the match, but Centre closed out the match with two consecutive kills.

Sewanee bounced back against Berea, holding the Mountaineers to a .101 hitting percentage and posting an 11-2 advantage in aces. Gann led the Tigers with 10 kills, while McAuley hit .556 with six kills. Laney Barnes recorded 13 assists, and Caruso added 10 digs.

The Tigers overcame an early deficit in the opening set, scoring six consecutive points late in the frame to take control. Sewanee held on for a 25-20 victory.

Berea led 11-7 in the second set before a 5-0 Sewanee run gave the Tigers their first lead. The Mountaineers tied the set at 21, but two kills from Merkler helped Sewanee close out the frame, 25-23.

Sewanee broke open the third set with a 9-1 run after Berea pulled within one at 9-8. Merkler, McAuley, Gann, and Charlotte Lee each recorded a kill during the run as the Tigers pulled away for a 25-18 victory.

Sewanee returns home Sept. 26-27 to host an SAA quad match. The Tigers will play at 6 p.m. CT on Saturday and 2 p.m. CT on Sunday.
