SEWANEE, Tenn. – Barton Mixon rushed for 120 yards and caught four passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns as Sewanee defeated N.C. Wesleyan, 24-17, on Saturday afternoon at McGee Field at Harris Stadium. The victory marked the 500th win in program history and the first career victory for head coach Joe Freitag.

Mixon accounted for both Sewanee touchdowns through the air, including a 51-yard touchdown reception from Cam Beasley in the first quarter and the go-ahead 10-yard touchdown catch from Maddox Franklin with 6:35 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Sewanee opened the game with a pair of first-quarter touchdowns. Beasley capped an eight-play, 52-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run with 10:47 remaining in the opening quarter. Following an hour and a half lightning delay, the Tigers returned to the field and three minutes later, Beasley connected with Mixon for the 51-yard score to give the Tigers a 14-0 lead.

N.C. Wesleyan answered with a 35-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter before Levi Dorsey added a 23-yard field goal early in the second quarter to extend Sewanee's lead to 17-7. The Battling Bishops added a 41-yard field goal before halftime to make it 17-10 at the break.

N.C. Wesleyan tied the game at 17-17 with a touchdown drive in the third quarter, setting up a decisive fourth quarter.

After the Battling Bishops missed a 43-yard field goal with 1:43 remaining in the third quarter, Sewanee took over and eventually punted to open the fourth. N.C. Wesleyan drove deep into Sewanee territory on its ensuing possession, but Ethan Fay fumbled at the Sewanee two-yard line, with Isaiah Copeland forcing the fumble and the Tigers taking over at their own 20.

Sewanee capitalized on the opportunity, driving 80 yards on eight plays. Mixon carried three times for 18 yards on the drive before Franklin found him for a 10-yard touchdown with 6:35 remaining, putting the Tigers ahead, 24-17.

The Sewanee defense then held N.C. Wesleyan scoreless on its final possession. Malcolm Shaw intercepted Braden Selvage at the Sewanee 10-yard line with 1:13 remaining, allowing the Tigers to run out the clock and secure the victory.

Mixon led Sewanee with 120 rushing yards on 22 carries and added 105 receiving yards on four catches. Franklin completed five of seven passes for 62 yards and a touchdown, while Beasley completed three of nine for 72 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Clay Woody led the Tigers with 13 tackles, while Isaiah Copeland recorded 10 tackles and a forced fumble. Jack Rish and Brody Sanderson added eight and seven tackles, respectively. Shaw finished with five tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery.

Sewanee has a bye week before opening conference play at home against Southwestern at 1 p.m. at McGee Field, Harris Stadium.
