Southwestern tops Sewanee in Tigers' SAA opener

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Barton Mixon recorded 226 all-purpose yards and threw a 51-yard pass, but the Tigers fell in their first conference game of the season to Southwestern, 42-21, on Saturday afternoon.

Maddox Franklin made his first career start, throwing for 199 yards and three touchdowns.

For the third straight game, Mixon tallied over 200 all-purpose yards. He had three catches for 130 yards and two scores while rushing for 96 yards. He also found Brennan Reed on a long ball after taking a lateral from Franklin.

On the defensive side, Cooper Jones, Logan McGinnis, and Peyton Martin each forced a fumble. Isaiah Copeland, Champ Hatfield, and James Gibbs made recoveries. Additionally, Jaden Gnagy blocked a field goal at the end of the first half.

Jones led the way with nine tackles (six solo, three assisted). He and Gnagy paced the Tigers with 1.5 tackles for loss.

The Pirates opened the scoring on a 25-yarder from Jaxon Sims to Reece Cutrer in the first quarter.

Five minutes into the second quarter, Franklin connected with Mixon on a deep 63-yard touchdown pass. He later floated the ball to the right side of the end zone to Trevon Garden from 18 yards out to give Sewanee its first lead.

The Pirates tied the game with under two minutes left on a 29-yard pass from Jaxon Sims to Parker Threats.

Midway through the third, Mixon scored his second touchdown, a 57-yard catch-and-run off a checkdown. Sims then connected with Graydon Thompson from 36 yards out to tie the game at 21 with 5:07 left in the period.

Late in the third quarter, the Pirates' defense collected an interception and forced a fumble on back-to-back drives, giving their offense the ball in the red zone both times. Sims threw a 20-yarder to Thompson, while Evan Carrosquilla added a three-yard rushing touchdown to give the Pirates a 35-21 lead off the two turnovers.

A seven-yard rushing touchdown from Jonathan Martin Jr. sealed the game with 2:11 left in the fourth.

Sewanee travels to Maryville on Saturday, October 10. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT.
