Carrie Hanshue Austin enters her second season as Assistant Director of Internal Operations at the University of the South in 2023-24. In her role at the Sewanee, she will oversee business operations, compliance, facilities and game management for the department.
Prior to her arrival in Tennessee, Austin was at Ferrum College (Va.) as the program's field hockey coach from 2014-21.
During her tenure with the Panthers, she was elevated to Director of Compliance (2018), Senior Woman Administrator (2019) and Assistant Director of Athletics (2021). She assisted with the day-to-day operations of the athletics senior leadership team, coordinated comprehensive programs to ensure compliance with the NCAA and the institution, oversaw multiple varsity teams, assisted facility scheduling and provided support and advocate coaches and athletic programs.
Additionally, she served on the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Committee, the Panther PRIDE Program Steering Committee and the President's Innovation Team.
Prior to her time in Ferrum, Austin served as an Associate Field Hockey Coach at Appalachian State University from 2007-13. She assisted with all facets of running an NCAA Division I field hockey program, including player development, practices, recruiting, team travel, equipment, budgeting, fundraising, community service, alumni relations, camps and clinics. Prior to that, she was an assistant field hockey coach at her alma mater, West Chester University.
Austin graduated in 2006 from West Chester University (Pa.) in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. She graduated with a Master of Public Administration degree from Arkansas State University in 2022.
She is married to her husband Ben, and they have two boys, John and Levi.
