Tigers fall to No. 2 CMS in NCAA Sweet 16

Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee's men's tennis team fell to No. 2-ranked Claremont Mudd Scripps on Saturday afternoon in the Round of 16 in the NCAA Division III Championships, 4-0. 

The Staggs took control early, as Lucas Wrigley and Max Verellen fell at three, 6-1, and the Staggs secured the doubles point at one, as Andre-Remi Jakobi and Samuel Schroerlucke fell to Advik Mareedu and Caleb Steeles, the No. 1-ranked doubles team in the country.

In singles, Ben Lammert fell at three, 6-0, 6-1, and the No. 1-ranked singles player in Division III, Mareedu, got his team within one point of a spot in the Elite Eight, as he defeated Jakobi, 6-2, 6-3. At four, Schroerlucke fell to Raja, 6-3, 6-4, securing the win for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. When play was halted, Henry Hyden was down 6-3, 5-3 to the No. 18-ranked singles player in Division III, Warren Pham. Verellen lost the first set on court five before battling back to take the second, 6-2, and was at 2 all in the third set. At six, Wrigley dropped a tight first set in a tiebreaker, 7-5, and was at 1-3 in the second. 

The Tigers finish the season 22-2 on the year, and ranked 14th in the country, capping off the best record in program history, and the least losses since the 1956 team was 9-2, and marking their fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships since COVID-19, and their fourth consecutive Sweet 16 appearance. 

Samuel Schroerlucke and Andre-Remi Jakobi were named as the first alternates for the Division III Doubles championships in Chattanooga, Tenn.
