Late rally sends Oglethorpe past Sewanee in 11-innings

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee jumped out to an early lead and held a four-run advantage late, but Oglethorpe University rallied to defeat the Tigers, 7-6, in 11 innings on Friday evening at Hermance Stadium.

Sewanee (20-16-1, 10-9 SAA) built momentum early behind the bat of Charlie Teel, who went 3-for-5 with a home run, double, and RBI. Will Jennewein added a solo home run, while Max Kilburn recorded two doubles and an RBI in the contest.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Tigers responded in the second when Jennewein launched a game-tying home run to right-center. Sewanee then took control in the third inning, as Teel's solo shot and RBIs from Kilburn and John Bagwell helped plate three runs and give the Tigers a 4-1 advantage.

Sewanee extended its lead to 5-1 in the fourth and carried that margin into the late innings behind a strong start from Taj Donald, who allowed just two runs over 6.2 innings while striking out six.

The Tigers appeared in control after Owen Andress drove in a run in the eighth to make it 6-2, but Oglethorpe answered with a decisive four-run rally in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by a three-RBI double from Cade Eidam to even the score at 6-6.

Both teams traded scoreless frames in the ninth and 10th innings before Oglethorpe loaded the bases in the 11th. A two-out single from Nick Morgan brought home the winning run, sealing the comeback victory for the Stormy Petrels.

Eli Potter and Childers Winn combined to pitch the final 4.1 innings for Sewanee, with Winn taking the loss despite allowing just one run in three innings of work.

Sewanee finished with 11 hits in the contest, led by multi-hit performances from Teel, Kilburn, and Andress.

The Tigers play the final two games in the series on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET/Noon CT and 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT.
