SEWANEE, Tenn. –
John Bagwell posted three hits,
Charlie Teel recorded two hits and two runs scored and
Austin Graber tossed 5.2 effective innings in Sewanee's 8-7 victory over Oglethorpe University in the first game of Saturday's baseball doubleheader in Atlanta, Ga.
Oglethorpe used two big innings to claim the second contest, 16-3.
Max Kilburn and
Bill Gantt each scored twice,
Aidan Petrocco drove in two runs and
Owen Andress collected two hits in the opener for the Tigers (21-17-1, 11-10 SAA). Sewanee plated five runs in the fourth inning and two more in the sixth to take an 8-2 advantage, but the Stormy Petrels (21-19, 11-10) scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Oglethorpe hit a solo homer to leadoff the bottom of the ninth and loaded the bases with one out before Cade Eidam bounced into a game-ending 4-6-3 doubleplay, with Sewanee surviving, 8-7.
Graber (4-2) allowed two earned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
Jake Walling tossed a scoreless seventh and
Will Berry did the same in the eighth before running into trouble in the ninth.
Davis Jones got the final three outs for his first save.
Oglethorpe starter Micah Knox (1-3) suffered the loss, giving up five earned runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings.
The Tigers got on the board first with a two-out walk to Kilburn in the second inning. Andress and Bagwell followed with singles, plating Kilburn for a 1-0 edge.
The Stormy Petrels took the lead in the third inning after a leadoff single from Eidam. Trey Kinnan reached on an error, putting runners on second and third, though Eidam was thrown out at the plate on the groundout by Evan Smallwood. With two outs Brick Conway singled to right, scoring two runs for the home team.
Sewanee answered in the fourth with five runs on five hits, starting with a one-out single by Kilburn. With two outs Bagwell singled and Gantt walked, loading the bases. Petrocco scored two runs with a single up the middle and two more runners came home on a throwing error by Oglethorpe.
Zach Fortman then doubled down the leftfield line, plating a run for a 6-2 Tigers advantage.
In the sixth Gantt singled to leadoff, went to second on a wild pitch, third on a fly ball by Petrocco and scored on a fielder's choice to first base by Teel, who reached on the play. Teel stole second and came across on a two-out double by
Tyler Pinson, extending the lead to 8-2.
The Stormy Petrels cut into the deficit in the bottom of the inning, starting with walks to Jace Armstrong and Ben Chatham. With two outs
George Kell relieved Graber and also walked Eidam. Kinnan's single to center plated two runs and Eidam later scored on a wild pitch. Kinnan also scored on a throwing error by the Tigers, making it 8-6.
Conway homered to leadoff the bottom of the ninth for the home team and Armstrong singled before a walk to Aiden Hosford. Jones entered the game and walked Nick Morgan with one out before inducing the game-ending doubleplay.
In the second contest Oglethorpe plated eight runs on four hits and the help of six walks and the Stormy Petrels added six more runs in the third on six hits.
Sewanee tied for fourth in the final SAA standings with Oglethorpe and Centre College, qualifying for the six-team conference championships that begin Thursday in Rome, Ga.
