Five-run second sends Maryville past Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Charlie Teel went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run, and Sewanee outhit Maryville 13-8, but a five-run second inning proved too much to overcome as the Scots secured a 9-5 victory on Tuesday afternoon.

Maryville (19-10) broke the game open early, capitalizing on a combination of walks, wild pitches, and a Sewanee error to plate five runs in the second inning. The Scots added another run in the third on an RBI single from Lucas Mendoza to take a 6-0 lead.

Sewanee (14-12-1) chipped away in the fourth, as Zach Fortman walked and later scored on an RBI single from Spencer Yu. John Bagwell followed with a run-scoring single to cut the deficit to 6-2.

After Maryville extended its lead with two runs in the sixth, Sewanee responded in the bottom half. Fortman singled and came around to score on an RBI knock from Will Jennewein, trimming the margin to 8-3.

The Tigers made their biggest push in the seventh inning. Ethan Williams was hit by a pitch and Sebastian Leinberger followed with a single before Teel launched a two-run home run to right center, bringing Sewanee within three at 8-5. The Tigers continued to threaten, loading the bases later in the inning, but were unable to push across additional runs.

Maryville added an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI double by Det Dettwiller to make it 9-5.

Teel led the Tigers with three hits and two RBIs, while Fortman added two hits and two runs scored. Leinberger and Jennewein also recorded multi-hit performances as Sewanee finished with 13 hits on the afternoon.

Layton Bilderback (1-1) took the loss, allowing four runs, two earned, while issuing four walks in 1.1 innings. Cody Boisvert (3-0) earned the win for the Scots, allowing five runs on 10 hits over 6.2 innings, while Xavier Resto recorded the final seven outs for his second save.

Sewanee hosts Millsaps this weekend for a conference series on Saturday with a double header at Noon and 3 p.m.
