Teel collects six hits, save in doubleheader split with Millsaps

SEWANEE, Tenn.Charlie Teel posted three hits and scored twice, John Bagwell drove in three runs and Aidan Petrocco's two-run single in the seventh put Sewanee in front for good in a 6-3 victory in the first game of Saturday's baseball doubleheader against Millsaps College.
 
The Tigers (15-13-1, 5-6 SAA) dropped the second game, 6-5, with Millsaps scoring three times in the seventh inning to overcome an early deficit.
 
In the opener Bagwell's infield single got Sewanee on the board in the fourth inning and his sacrifice fly in the sixth pulled the Tigers within, 3-2. Petrocco's single in the seventh was part of a four-run frame, including an RBI groundout from Bagwell later in the inning.
 
Taj Donald tossed five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Eli Potter (5-1) picked up the win with three-plus scoreless innings of relief, striking out one, and Teel recorded third save, getting the final three outs, including a doubleplay ground ball to end the contest.
 
Millsaps starter Andrew Bradley worked four innings, giving up one run on six hits, and Fred Fields (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on four hits in 2.1 innings.
 
Sewanee scored five runs in the first three innings in the second contest but was unable to hold the lead. The Majors (12-17, 4-7) plated three runs in the seventh with the help of two Tigers errors as well as two walks and a hit batter.
 
Teel registered three more hits and Sebastian Leinberger added two hits. Austin Graber tossed five innings in the start, allowing two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. Ryan Moll (0-1) took the loss, giving up one run on two hits.
 
Cam Cressend worked five innings for Millsaps, allowing five runs, one earned, on five hits with four walks. John Montour (2-5) picked up the win with four scoreless innings, giving up two hits with no walks and one strikeout.
 
FIRST GAME
Hudson Moberly hit a solo homer with one out in the second inning to put the Majors in front and the visitors added another run in the fourth with a double from Sam Thomas and an RBI single by Moberly.
 
The Tigers got on the board in the fourth thanks to a leadoff triple from Tyler Pinson and an infield single by Bagwell.
 
Millsaps got the run back in the fifth when Wesley Grant led off with a double down the leftfield line, moved to third on an errant pickoff attempt and scored on a sacrifice fly by Carson Williams.
 
Sewanee cut the deficit to one again but missed a chance to tie the game in the sixth after Teel led off with a single and Pinson was hit. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Zach Fortman and Teel scored on Bagwell's sacrifice fly to right, but Will Jennewein lined out sharply to center to end the inning with the Tigers trailing, 3-2.
 
Sewanee plated four runs in the seventh inning, taking advantage of some wildness from the Majors.
 
Owen Andress led off with a single and Leinberger was hit. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Petrocco's single down the leftfield line plated two runs, though Petrocco was thrown out trying to steal second.
 
Spencer Yu walked and Teel executed a perfect bunt single down the third base line before Pinson drew a free pass, loading the bases. Fortman also walked, forcing in a run, and Bagwell's groundout pushed across another for a 6-3 advantage.
 
Millsaps threatened in the ninth when Kyle Veal, Jr., led off with a single to right and Layne Cross greeted Teel with a single to right as well, but the righthander struck out Grant and Williams grounded into a 5-3 doubleplay to end the game.
 
SECOND GAME
Teel singled with two outs in the first and took second when Grant fumbled the ball in center. Pinson followed with an RBI single to rightcenter for an early lead for the Tigers.
 
In the second inning Fortman drew a leadoff walk and Bagwell reached on a sacrifice bunt attempt when the throw to first was wild by Cressend. Jennewein moved the runners to second and third with a sac bunt and with two outs, Leinberger singled to right, plating a run for a 2-0 edge.
 
The Tigers took advantage of a costly throwing error for three more runs in the third inning.
 
Yu walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, third on a long fly ball by Teel and after a walk to Pinson, scored on bunt single by Fortman. Pinson took third on a deep fly ball by Bagwell and Fortman took off for second. Millsaps catcher Christian Kretzer threw behind Pinson at third and the throw was wild, rolling all the way to the wall. Pinson and Fortman both scored on the play for a 5-0 lead.
 
The Majors cut into the deficit in the fourth with a two-out single to left by Morgan followed with a two-run homer to leftcenter from Grant.
 
Connor Schell singled to leadoff the Millsaps fifth and with one out, EJ Ousley dumped a single down the rightfield line, but he was thrown out trying to stretch it to double by Leinberger. Williams lined out to leftcenter to end the threat with the Tigers still in front, 5-2.
 
The Majors added a run in the sixth after Wes Carr was hit to start the inning and Morgan walked. Carr took third on a wild pitch and scored on Grant's deep fly ball to center, but Sewanee reliever Davis Jones struck out Veal, Jr., and Cross to end the inning.
 
Millsaps scored three times in the seventh to take the lead with the aid of two Sewanee errors.
 
Schell was hit to start the frame and Kretzer walked, forcing a pitching change, and Moll issued a free pass to Ousley. Schell scored on the play on a throwing error by Andress and Williams loaded the bases with a bunt single. Morgan singled to deep leftcenter but only one run scored and Ousley came across on a sac fly from Grant for a 6-5 edge for the Majors.
 
Montour retired the Tigers in order in the eighth and ninth innings and gave up singles to Teel and Leinberger in the sixth and seventh, otherwise shutting down the home team to even the series at one game apiece.
 
Sewanee and Millsaps conclude the series with a single game Sunday at Noon. Senior Day activities will take place before the contest for eight Tiger players.
