Tigers roll in Monday Matinee

SEWANEE, Tenn. –  Charles Moran recorded five points on three goals and two assists, while Hank Walsh and Will Kennedy each added a hat trick as Sewanee rolled past Southern Virginia, 15-4, on Monday afternoon.

Kennedy's three goals marked a milestone, as he recorded his 100th career point in the victory.

Gus Albright led the Tigers defensively with seven ground balls and two caused turnovers. At the faceoff X, Max Bensing went 8-of-12 with six ground balls, while Benton Sullivan finished 7-of-11 with four ground balls.

Moran added three ground balls to his stat line, and Robert Freeman chipped in an assist and two ground balls. Jack Jarrell, Sam Ramberg, Tyler Clary, and Henry Westfall each contributed two ground balls.

In goal, Flynn Bowman made eight saves in 30 minutes of action. Jaser Amer followed with seven saves over 24:30, and Hayden Regan added three saves in the final 5:30.

Sewanee wasted little time getting on the board, as Moran opened the scoring after collecting a ground ball. Southern Virginia answered two minutes later, but a caused turnover by Charlie Hanson and a ground ball from James Bogusky set up a long-range goal from Kennedy to regain the lead.

Moran then found Kennedy on a man-up opportunity just 1:37 later. After the Knights responded with a man-up goal of their own, Sewanee closed the opening quarter strong with two goals. Sage Cookerly scored the fourth goal, and following a faceoff win by Sullivan, Freeman connected with Moran to make it 5-2.

The Tigers took full control in the second quarter, scoring five unanswered goals. Moran struck just 41 seconds into the period, and a save from Bowman led to a goal from JM DuPree. Walsh added another following a Bowman stop, and later capitalized again after Bensing won the faceoff to extend the lead to eight. Harrison Fuller also found the back of the net during the run.

Walsh completed his hat trick early in the third quarter after another caused turnover and ground ball by Hanson. Moran and Kennedy connected once more following a failed clear, and a save by Amer paired with a ground ball from Clary led to a goal by Jake Greene, pushing the lead to 13-2.

Southern Virginia scored twice early in the fourth quarter, but Sewanee answered twice as Corbet Darden finished an assist from Peter Gausion and John Openshaw had the final word, tallying the Tigers' last goal with 10:18 remaining.

Sewanee closes out conference play on the road, traveling to face Oglethorpe on April 11 and Rhodes on April 18.
