Women's lacrosse rolls to a 19-7 win at Berry

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Ellen Lewis tallied eight points on four goals and four assists, while Alex Kelly added four goals, and Sally Herrington reached the 200-career goal milestone as Sewanee's women's lacrosse team defeated Berry, 19-7, on the road to improve to 12-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

Lewis added four draw controls, a caused turnover, and a ground ball to her performance, while Marlin Price collected six points on four assists and two goals. Kelly also recorded an assist and a draw control, while Herrington finished with four goals and an assist.

Sally Whitehead led the Tigers with five draw controls and three ground balls. Kennedy Harcourt added a goal and an assist along with two draw controls and three ground balls. Ella Townsend contributed two goals, a game-high five ground balls, and three caused turnovers, while Izzo Palmer totaled four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Berry opened the scoring just 37 seconds into the contest after winning the draw control. Sewanee responded immediately, as Harcourt controlled the ensuing draw and Erika Bolcar found the back of the cage to even the score. Berry regained the lead with another quick goal, but the Tigers answered once again, as Palmer caused a turnover and Lewis converted a free-position opportunity.

Following the early back-and-forth, Sewanee took control, scoring five unanswered goals to close the first quarter and build a 6-2 lead. Herrington sparked the run with a caused turnover and ground ball before assisting on a Lewis goal. Whitehead secured the draw control, and Price quickly connected with Townsend for another score. Lewis and Price teamed up again for Sewanee's fifth goal, before Herrington added a free-position goal to cap the period.

Kelly opened the second quarter with a man-up goal off an assist from Bolcar. Berry responded midway through the period, but Sewanee extended its lead as Lewis caused a turnover, collected the ground ball, and found Herrington for a goal with 3:44 remaining in the half.

The Tigers closed the half with a flurry, scoring three goals in the final minute. Lewis struck first off a feed from Kelly, then Kelly finished a pass from Harcourt. With just 12 seconds remaining, Herrington netted a man-up goal off an assist from Lewis to send Sewanee into halftime with an 11-3 advantage.

Sewanee continued its momentum into the third quarter, scoring three more unanswered goals to extend the run to seven straight. Kelly opened the scoring, Price connected with Herrington for a man-up goal, and Price later found Townsend for another score. Berry added a free-position goal, but Harcourt answered with one of her own to give Sewanee a 14-4 lead heading into the final period.

Berry scored twice to open the fourth quarter, but Price halted the run with a free-position goal. Kelly added her fourth goal of the game shortly after. Following another Berry goal, Price found
Lewis for a score with 3:42 remaining, and Lewis later assisted Haley Price for the final goal in a 19-7 Sewanee victory.

Sewanee returns home to face Oglethorpe on April 11 at 2 p.m.
