Tigers drop double header against Millsaps on Senior Day

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee's softball team celebrated its seniors, but Millsaps College used early scoring in both contests to sweep a Southern Athletic Association doubleheader from Sewanee, taking game one 9-2 before shutting out the Tigers, 4-0, in the nightcap Friday afternoon at Tiger Field.

GAME ONE
Millsaps scored seven runs across the second and third innings to build an early cushion and went on to a 9-2 victory in the opener.

After a scoreless first inning, the Majors struck for three runs in the second, highlighted by a two-run double from Liza Gregg. Millsaps added four more runs in the third, using four hits and two walks to push the lead to 7-0.
Sewanee got on the board in the fourth inning. Grace Black and Abbie Buckner opened the frame with back-to-back singles before Maggie Barker reached on an error to load the bases. Ansley Giffin brought home Black with a sacrifice fly, and Madilyn Parker followed with a groundout that plated Buckner to make it 7-2.

Millsaps tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Allana Vasquez and a bases-loaded walk to Gregg.

Black, Buckner and Barker each recorded a hit for the Tigers. Giffin drove in one run and Parker added the other RBI. Reagan Huskey (7-10) took the loss after allowing seven runs in 2.1 innings, while Giffin worked 4.2 innings in relief with four strikeouts. Millsaps' Hailey Marange limited Sewanee to three hits in a complete-game effort.

GAME TWO
Millsaps took advantage of early opportunities and a strong pitching performance to claim a 4-0 shutout in the second game.

The Majors scored twice in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on an error and an RBI double from Hailey Peterson. Millsaps added two more runs in the third as Kadence Cannon delivered a two-run single up the middle for a 4-0 lead.

Sewanee managed just two hits in the contest, singles from Grace Black and Ansley Giffin. The Tigers put a runner on in the second, fifth and sixth innings but were unable to push across a run against Allana Vasquez, who struck out seven in a complete-game shutout.

Abbie Buckner (4-6) was charged with the loss, allowing two runs in two innings of work. Abby Winkler and Reagan Huskey combined for five scoreless innings in relief, holding Millsaps to three hits over the final five frames.

Sewanee will play the final game in the series on Sunday at Noon.
