SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Zach Fortman posted three hits with six RBIs, including a grand slam, and Sewanee scored seven runs in the fourth and six in the fifth, defeating Millsaps College, 16-5, in seven innings in baseball action here Sunday at Montgomery Field.
The Tigers (16-13-1, 6-6 SAA) clinched the series with the win, recording 13 hits and taking advantage of 12 walks and one hit batter by six Majors pitchers.
Aidan Petrocco,
Charlie Teel and
Spencer Yu each homered in the seven-run fourth inning and Fortman's grand slam highlighted the fifth inning. Fortman added two more RBIs on a triple in the sixth. Petrocco,
Max Kilburn and
Owen Andress all collected two hits for the Tigers and Petrocco and
Sebastian Leinberger each scored three times.
Jake Walling (2-1) tossed 2.1 innings of relief for the win, allowing one run on two hits with one strikeout. Sewanee starter
Jack Merril worked 2.2 innings, giving up no runs on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Jackson Devey (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on three hits in 3.1 innings. He walked six and struck out three.
The Tigers stranded a pair of runners in the first inning and left the bases loaded in the second before exploding for seven runs in the fourth inning.
Will Jennewein walked with one out and Andress doubled to leftcenter. Wesley Grant fumbled the ball and Jennewein scored on the play. Andress then scored on a pair of passed balls.
Leinberger walked, ending the day for Devey, and
Aidan Petrocco greeted reliever Jackson Woolley with a two-run homer to leftcenter. Teel followed with a solo shot to rightcenter and with two outs, after
Tyler Pinson was hit, Yu's high fly ball to rightcenter got into the jet stream and sailed over the wall for a two-run homer and a 7-0 Sewanee advantage.
The Majors got on the board in the fifth when Kyle Veal, Jr., walked and Layne Cross singled to left before a long single to rightcenter from Carston Williams that scored a run, but Wes Carr grounded into a doubleplay to end the inning.
The Tigers added to the lead in the bottom of the inning, starting with a walk to Jennewein before a sacrifice bunt by Andress. Leinberger also walked before Petrocco singled through the six-hole, driving in a run. Teel walked and Fortman drilled a grand slam to left, extending the advantage to 12-1.
Pinson and
Max Kilburn both singled later in the inning and
Oliver Snell and Jennewein both walked, forcing in a run, for a 13-1 lead.
In the sixth Mason Morgan walked for the Majors and Connor Schell and EJ Ousley both drew free passes with one out. Christian Kretzer's single to leftcenter plated two runs.
Leinberger led off the bottom of the inning with a single to center and Petrocco walked before a two-run triple to rightcenter by Fortman. He later scored on a groundout by Pinson.
Millsaps tried to extend the game with two runs in the seventh, solo homers from Williams and Morgan. Schell singled and Ousley was hit with two outs before pinch-hitter Bo Garofalo struck out to end the contest.
Sewanee travels to Trinity University next weekend for a three-game series beginning Saturday.
