Softball drops two games in final inning at Hanover

SEWANEE, Tenn.Ansley Giffin collected three hits with two runs in the opener and Sydney Tackett posted three hits and three runs scored in the second game, but Hanover College erased late-inning deficits in both contests, sweeping Sewanee, 7-6 and 9-8, in softball action Sunday in Hanover, Ind.

GAME ONE
In the first game Giffin posted three hits and two runs scored and Madilyn Parker drove in two runs, but Hanover plated six runs in the final three innings for a 7-6 victory.

The Tigers took a 2-1 lead in the third inning with an RBI bunt single by Grace Black and a sacrifice fly from Tackett. Christian Cain's run-scoring double plated a run in the fourth.

Giffin drove in a run with a single and Parker followed with a two-run single in the fifth for a 6-1 Sewanee advantage. The Panthers plated two runs in the fifth, three more in the sixth and won the contest with a run in the bottom of the seventh.

Reagan Huskey tossed five innings in the circle for the Tigers, allowing six runs on six hits with one strikeout. Abby Winkler suffered the loss, giving up one unearned run with three walks and two strikeouts in 1.2 innings.

Hanover plated a run in the bottom of the first after Claire King led off with a single, stole second and scored on a groundout by Madi Kammer.

Huskey helped herself with a leadoff single in the third and KK Wadkins reached on a throwing error by the pitcher. Black's bunt single pushed across a run and Tackett's sac fly plated Wadkins for a 2-1 edge.

Giffin doubled to leadoff the fourth and Cain collected a double two batters later, extending the lead to 3-1.

In the fifth Tackett and Maggie Barker both singled with two outs before an RBI single from Giffin. The runners moved up on the throw and both scored on Parker's single up the middle for a 6-1 advantage.

The Panthers netted two runs in the fifth when Morgan Bailey doubled and scored on a single from Sydney Foy. Madi Kammer's two-out single up the middle plated a run, cutting the Sewanee lead to 6-3.

In the sixth Ally Crist singled and Ashley Fulton was hit before an RBI single from Bailey, prompting a pitching change by the Tigers. Foy's ground ball up the middle pushed across another run and Kammer's groundout plated the tying run.

Karsyn Naue walked to start the seventh and Crist reached on a throwing error. Fulton walked, loading the bases, though Winkler got a groundout and a strikeout, but Foy's single to rightcenter plated the winning run.

GAME TWO
Tackett collected three hits and three runs scored and Barker added two hits with two runs scored in the second contest. Both teams scored four runs in the third inning and Sewanee added two runs in the fifth.

The Panthers regained the lead with two runs in the sixth, but the Tigers answered with two runs in the top of the seventh. Unfortunately, Hanover plated two runs in the bottom of the inning to complete the sweep.

Wadkins started the fourth with a triple for the Tigers. Abbie Buckner singled home a run and later scored on a single up the middle from Tackett. Barker then singled and Giffin plated a run with a right to right. Parker's groundout pushed across another run for a 4-0 advantage.

The Panthers quickly tied the game in the bottom of the inning, with Foy and King both singling before an RBI base hit from Kammer. Savannah Riley plated a run with a single to right and Naue's groundout scored another. Jade Wims came across on a failed pickoff throw, knotting the contest at four.

Sewanee regained the lead in the fifth thanks to three straight singles from Black, Tackett and Barker, the final one scoring a run. Parker later walked and stole second, with Tackett coming across on an error on the play.

It remained 6-4 Tigers until the bottom of the sixth when Bailey singled and Addison Smith reached on an error, putting runners on the corners. King's bunt single plated a run and she stole second, with Smith taking home on the play. Kammer then singled and Lilly Cunagin's squeeze bunt pushed across King with the go-ahead run.

Sewanee responded with two runs in the top of the seventh, starting with walks to Tackett and Barker. Parker's ground ball did not result in an out, loading the bases, and Winkler followed with a two-run single to left for an 8-7 edge.

Much like the first game, the Tigers were unable to hold the lead, with Hanover scoring twice in the bottom of the inning.

Fulton doubled with one out and Bailey reached on an error, with pinch-runner Bri Stow scoring on the play. Bailey went to second on the error and third on a passed ball before an infield single by Smith plated the winning run for the Panthers.

Buckner worked the first two-plus innings in the circle for Sewanee before giving way to Giffin, who tossed 3.1 innings of relief and allowed one earned run on six hits with one strikeout. Huskey suffered the loss, giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits in one-plus inning of work.

Sewanee plays Tuesday at Asbury University at 1 p.m. CT and travels to Berea College on Thursday at 3 p.m. CT.
