SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee posted eight combined hits in two losses Tuesday, dropping 8-1 and 8-0 decision to Asbury University in softball action in Wilmore, Ky.
GAME ONE
Sewanee managed only four hits in the opener and scored on a double steal by
KK Wadkins and
Christian Cain in the fifth inning, trimming the deficit to 4-1.
Reagan Huskey (4-5) allowed four runs on three hits in four innings, striking out four but walking six. She worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning after an error and two walks and Asbury scored once in the second inning and three times in the fourth.
Josie Potter (5-0) pitched five innings for the win for the Eagles, giving up one run on three hits, and Abi Thompson tossed the final two innings.
In the second inning Tori Giurgevich walked with one out, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Elyanna Rogers and scored on a double from Abigail Moffat.
The Tigers managed only three baserunners through the first four innings, with one hit from
Grace Black in the first and walks to Huskey and
Ansley Giffin in the third and fourth innings.
Samantha Bottom started the bottom of the fourth with a walk for the Eagles and Giurgevich singled with one out. With two outs Moffat homered down the leftfield line for a 4-0 lead for the home team.
Cain singled to leadoff the fifth for Sewanee and moved to second on Huskey's groundout. Wadkins then singled, putting runners on the corners, and the Tigers executed the double steal to plate its only run.
Asbury broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth after a double from Daegan Flamm and walks to Bottom and Josie Potter. Giurgevich drove in a run and reached on an error and Rogers was hit, forcing in another. Moffat then doubled home two runs, stretching the lead to 8-1.
Sydney Tackett was hit and
Maggie Barker singled to start the sixth for the Tigers, but after a groundout by Giffin pushed the runners to second and third, they were stranded there.
GAME TWO
Abbie Buckner collected two hits with a double, but the Tigers stranded five runners on base and Asbury scored five times in the sixth inning to take the victory.
Buckner worked out of a bases loaded jam in the second inning and stranded two runners in the first and third. The game remained scoreless until the fourth when Giurgevich walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Togers. Moffat then doubled, with Giurgevich taking third. One run scored on a groundout by Kaylee Lorros and the other came across on a two-out single from Emily Zink.
In the fifth Bottom singled and Giurgevich walked with one out before Rogers was hit, loading the bases. Moffat's groundout plated a run for a 3-0 Asbury advantage.
The Eagles broke the game open in the sixth when Moira Tinsley led off with a double and Bottom's one-out single to center scored a run. Emma Popplewell reached on an infield single and Rogers walked with two outs.
Moffat singled to center and ball got all the way to the wall, clearing the bases. Korris followed with an RBI single, ending the contest.
Buckner (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on seven hits in four innings. Thompson tossed a four-hit shutout for the Eagles, striking out four and not walking a batter.
Sewanee plays its final contests in a current 10-game road swing this Thursday at Berea College and returns home to face Wesleyan College this Sunday at Noon.
