Softball drops doubleheader to Southwestern

 SEWANEE, Tenn. – Abby Winkler recorded two hits across the doubleheader, and Ansley Giffin added two hits of her own, but Southwestern used big innings to sweep Sewanee, 9-0 and 12-3, in softball action on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field.

In the first game, Southwestern erupted for six runs over the first two innings and Sophia Ytuarte tossed a one-hitter as Sewanee fell 9-0 in five innings in the opener.

The Pirates struck quickly with three runs in the first inning, capitalizing on multiple hits and a Sewanee error to take an early lead.

Southwestern added three more runs in the second, highlighted by a double and a sacrifice fly, extending the advantage to 6-0.

Sewanee's lone hit came in the fourth inning when Abbie Buckner singled to shortstop, but the Tigers were unable to string together offense against Ytuarte.

The Pirates added three runs in the fourth, using a two-run double and an RBI double to push the lead to 9-0.

Reagan Huskey took the loss in the circle after allowing six runs in the first inning of work. Ansley Giffin and Abby Winkler combined to hold Southwestern to three runs over the final four innings.

In game two, Ansley Giffin went 2-for-3 and Abby Winkler added two hits, but a six-run first inning from Southwestern proved too much to overcome in a 12-3 Sewanee loss in game two.

Southwestern capitalized on three Sewanee errors in the opening frame to score six runs and take early control.

Sewanee answered in the bottom of the first as Grace Black singled and came around to score on an RBI single from Maggie Barker.

The Tigers added two more runs in the second inning. Christian Cain reached and eventually scored, while Winkler singled and later crossed the plate on a base hit from Sydney Tackett to cut the deficit to 6-3.

Southwestern responded with two runs in the third inning and added four more in the fifth, taking advantage of walks and defensive miscues to extend the lead.

Winkler finished with two hits, while Giffin added two hits and Barker drove in a run.

Abbie Buckner took the loss in the circle, allowing six runs in the first inning.

The Tigers play the final game of the series on Sunday at Noon.
