SEWANEE, Tenn. – Maggie Barker homered, and Ansley Giffin recorded three hits, but Southwestern (Texas) used late runs to edge Sewanee, 5-4, in softball action the final game of the series on Sunday afternoon at Tiger Field.

Giffin finished 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Tigers, while Abbie Buckner added two hits and an RBI. Sewanee outhit Southwestern in the final game 11-10, but left six on base.

Barker recorded solo home run to open the second inning. The Tigers added another run later in the inning when Giffin singled and came around to score on a Southwestern throwing error, extending the lead to 2-0.

Southwestern answered in the third with an RBI single to cut the deficit in half before tying the game and taking the lead in the fifth. The Pirates used a sacrifice fly and an RBI double to move in front, 3-2.

Sewanee evened the score in the bottom of the fifth as KK Wadkins doubled to left center and later scored on an RBI single from Buckner to make it 3-3.

The Pirates regained control in the sixth inning, stringing together a double and a single to plate two runs and take a 5-3 advantage.

Sewanee continued to battle in the bottom half of the inning. Giffin and Madilyn Parker opened the frame with back-to-back singles, and Parker eventually scored on a Southwestern error to cut the deficit to one at 5-4.

The Tigers threatened in the seventh as Buckner worked a one-out walk, but Southwestern turned a double play to end the game.

Reagan Huskey started in the circle and allowed three runs over five innings of work, while Abby Winkler took the loss in relief.

Sewanee will host Franklin College on Thursday for a doubleheader before heading to Centre for their third conference series, with one game on Friday and two on Saturday.
