SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Tyler Pinson posted two hits and four RBIs and
Spencer Yu collected three hits and scored three times, but 15
th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater plated six runs in the sixth inning, overcoming a four-run deficit in a 10-6 victory over Sewanee in baseball action Thursday at Wahoos Stadium in Pensacola, Fla.
The Tigers (10-5-1) scored twice in the first inning on a two-run single from Pinson and he added a two-run double in the third inning.
Charlie Teel's run-scoring triple and a sacrifice fly from
Owen Andress put the Tigers in front, 6-2, in the fifth.
Whitewater (4-3) plated six runs in the sixth inning on five hits and the aid of one Sewanee error, taking the lead for good. The Warhawks added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
John Parker Rambo and
Taj Donald allowed a combined two unearned runs on four hits with three strikeouts in the first four innings and
Eli Potter (2-1) tossed a scoreless fifth inning before running into trouble in the sixth. He gave up six runs, three earned, on five hits with three strikeouts. The Tigers committed six errors and tossed five wild pitches in the loss.
Aidan Petrocco added two hits and two runs scored, as the one, two and four hitters in the lineup combined for seven of the team's nine hits. Teel added a hit, one RBI and a run scored out of the three spot as well. Sewanee struck out 14 times in the contest, half of those from the bottom three spots in the lineup.
Whitewater starter Franklin Kirchner allowed six runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Benjy Tucker (3-1) tossed 2.2 scoreless and hitless innings for the win and Gradin Taschner picked up the save with two scoreless frames, striking out five.
The Tigers started quickly with a single from Petrocco and a double by Yu before Pinson's one-out single up the middle put Sewanee in front, 2-0, in the top of the first.
The Warhawks evened the game in the second after Aaron Holland reached on an error with one out, went to second and third on wild pitches and scored on a two-out single to center from Dominik McVay. Jackson Spring then doubled to rightcenter, plating McVay for a 2-2 game.
Sewanee answered in the third with another single from Petrocco to leadoff and Yu reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, putting runners at second and third. Pinson doubled two batters later for a 4-2 advantage.
In the fifth Yu doubled to rightfield to begin the frame and Teel followed with a triple.
Will Jennewein walked with one out and Andress hit a sac fly against Tucker, extending the lead to 6-2.
Holland led off the sixth with a single for Whitewater and Danny Hopper reached on an infield single. With two outs Brady Gilroy doubled down the leftfield line, scoring both runners, and Nelson Phillips IV walked before an RBI single through the rightside from Andy Thies.
Evan Olson grounded to third, but Pinson booted the ball, extending the inning and allowing a run to come across. Leyton Bowers then doubled to right, plating two runs and giving Whitewater an 8-6 edge.
Spring reached on an error in the seventh and a bad pickoff attempt got away down the rightfield line. Spring reached third and scored on another errant throw to the infield.
In the eighth Phillips IV singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and third on a fly ball to right. Olson then singled through the leftside for the final run of the game.
Sewanee does not play this weekend and travels to Covenant College next Tuesday for a 2 p.m. CT game against the Scots.
