Loupassi's 10 points send Sewanee past DeSales, 15-11

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Manoli Loupassi recorded 10 points as Sewanee's men's lacrosse team defeated DeSales, 15-11, on Wednesday afternoon at The Boles School.

Loupassi scored six goals and added four assists for a career-high and program-tying 10 points while also collecting two ground balls. Will Kennedy added four goals, while Charles Moran tallied two. Harrison Fuller, Gus Albright, and Robert Freeman each added a goal.

Asa Nischwitz went 19-of-23 at the faceoff X and collected 14 ground balls. Beau Burnette, Tyler Clary, Flynn Bowman, and Albright each picked up three ground balls. Burnette also recorded four caused turnovers, while Moran and Charlie Hanson caused two each.

Sewanee got off to a quick start as Nischwitz won the opening faceoff, leading to a shot by Moran. DeSales goalkeeper AJ Ardizone made the initial save, but Albright collected the ground ball and scooped it into the net for the opening goal just 14 seconds into the game.

The Tigers continued to control the opening period, scoring three goals over the next 1:40. Moran tallied two goals and Kennedy added another to give Sewanee a 4-0 lead with 11:31 remaining in the first quarter.

Less than a minute later, Loupassi scored his first goal of the game off an assist from Sage Cookerly. Loupassi then found Kennedy for another goal shortly after, extending the lead to six. DeSales got on the board with 8:50 left in the quarter following a faceoff win.

Clary then caused a turnover, picked up the ground ball, and completed the clear before Loupassi added another Sewanee goal.

Jake Hurd scored his second goal, and DeSales' second of the game, on a man-up opportunity to close the scoring in the first quarter.

Loupassi opened the second quarter with two consecutive goals, pushing Sewanee's lead to seven. The Bulldogs responded with two goals of their own to close the half, sending Sewanee into the break with a 9-4 advantage.

DeSales opened the scoring in the third quarter before Loupassi collected a ground ball and scored his fifth goal of the game. The Bulldogs answered with another goal to make it 10-6 before Moran caused a turnover. Fuller picked up the ground ball and found Freeman open for Sewanee's 11th goal.

DeSales then controlled possession for the next 2:45, scoring three consecutive goals without Sewanee gaining possession to cut the deficit to two heading into the fourth quarter.

A slashing penalty just over two minutes into the final quarter gave Sewanee a man-up opportunity, and Loupassi found Kennedy for the extra-man goal. Loupassi then recorded back-to-back assists, setting up Fuller to push Sewanee's lead back to four.

Jason Reilly answered with a goal for DeSales with just under 10 minutes remaining.

Loupassi scored his sixth goal of the game with 5:48 left, and Sewanee added another just 40 seconds later as JM Dupree assisted Kennedy.

DeSales called a timeout with 3:14 remaining, and Hurd scored once more for the Bulldogs, but Sewanee held on to secure the 15-11 victory Wednesday afternoon in Jacksonville.

Sewanee will open conference play on Sunday at home against Centre at 1 p.m.
