Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Fast start sends Sewanee past Centre, 12-5

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee men's lacrosse used a dominant opening period to defeat Centre College, 12-5, on Sunday evening at home to open conference play.

The Tigers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

Manoli Loupassi led Sewanee with four goals and four ground balls. Will Kennedy added four points with a goal and three assists, while also recording two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Charles Moran and Henry Westfall each tallied two goals, with Moran adding a caused turnover and two ground balls. Sage Cookerly and Jake Greene also found the back of the cage for the Tigers.

At the faceoff X, Asa Nischwitz went 13-for-17 with six ground balls, helping Sewanee control possession throughout the game. Gus Albright caused three turnovers and picked up four ground balls, while Flynn Bowman made 10 saves and collected four ground balls in goal.

Sewanee dominated the opening period, jumping out to a 6-0 lead behind three goals from Loupassi. Nischwitz was perfect at the X in the first quarter, going 7-for-7 to give Sewanee possession after every goal.

Loupassi opened the scoring after picking up a ground ball and converting the opportunity. Nischwitz won the ensuing faceoff, and Albright secured the ground ball before Kennedy connected with Cookerly for the Tigers' second goal just over a minute later.

Sewanee maintained possession for the next 3:46, as Centre's only touch came on a clear attempt. Kennedy forced a turnover and scooped the ground ball before feeding Loupassi to make it 3-0.

Nischwitz won the next faceoff to give Sewanee possession again. Centre briefly gained the ball following a Sewanee turnover, but Moran caused a turnover and collected the ground ball to disrupt another Colonels clear. Griffin Peterson then connected with Moran for Sewanee's fourth goal.

Bowman sparked another possession with a save, and Moran scored his second straight goal off a feed from Kennedy. With one minute remaining in the quarter, Centre turned the ball over and Bowman scooped the ground ball, leading to Loupassi's third goal of the period and a 6-0 Sewanee lead heading into the second quarter. The Tigers also held Centre to just two shots in the period, with only one on goal.

Sewanee extended the run to seven straight goals just 23 seconds into the second quarter when Robert Freeman found Kennedy for a man-up goal.

Centre responded with three consecutive goals, including the first from Ryan Black with 11:34 remaining in the half, to cut the deficit to 7-3 with 6:11 to play.

Westfall halted the Colonels' run with an unassisted goal late in the half, sending Sewanee into the break with an 8-3 advantage.

Black opened the third quarter with his fourth goal of the game just 35 seconds in to make it 8-4. Neither team scored again until Kennedy caused another turnover on a failed Centre clear, leading to a Sewanee possession that ended with Hank Walsh finding the back of the net.

Less than two minutes later, Loupassi added Sewanee's 10th goal of the contest to push the lead back to six.

Westfall scored his second goal of the game with 12:28 remaining in the fourth quarter, and Greene later added a man-up goal off an assist from Loupassi for Sewanee's 12th tally.

Centre's Ben Hubbs added a goal with 39 seconds remaining for the final margin.

Sewanee will return to action Tuesday when the Tigers face Scranton at 2 p.m. before hosting Nazareth on Friday at 4 p.m.
