Tackett's six RBIs leads softball to road sweep

SEWANEE, Tenn.KK Wadkins posted three hits with four RBIs and three runs scored, Sydney Tackett and Maggie Barker each drove in three runs and Grace Black collected four hits, as Sewanee scored 10 times in the final three innings in a 12-2 victory in the first game of a doubleheader at Berea College on Thursday. In the second contest Tackett added three more RBIs, including an inside-the-park homer, in a 5-2 win, completing the doubleheader sweep for the Tigers.

GAME ONE
Wadkins collected three hits and hit a grand slam while Barker added a three-run homer and Ansley Giffin collected three hits in the win, helping the Tigers (7-9) record 18 hits in the victory.

Reagan Huskey (5-5) tossed a complete game, allowing two runs on six hits. She walked two and struck out seven. Maya Meads (0-2) suffered the loss for the Mountaineers, giving up eight runs on 15 hits in 5.1 innings.

Berea (1-11) scored in the bottom of the first after back-to-back doubles from Emily and Jessyca Searcy to start the frame, but Huskey got a line out and two strikeouts to end the inning.

The Tigers got on the board in the third when Wadkins doubled with two outs and scored on a single from Tackett, but the Mountaineers answered with a run in the bottom of the inning.

Mia Lewis singled with two outs and came around to score on a double from Kelly Wiard.

Sewanee came right back in the fourth with a one-out double from Giffin and a two-out two-bagger by Christain Cain, knotting the game at two.

The Tigers took the lead for good in the fifth, starting with a single and stolen base from Ace Anderson. Wadkins pushed the runner to third with a sacrifice bunt and Tackett's groundout plated Anderson.

With two outs Black and Abbie Buckner both singled and Barker followed with a three-run homer to leftcenter, her first of the season, giving the visitors a 6-2 advantage.

The sixth-inning rally for Sewanee started with a two-out double from Wadkins, who scored on a single from Tackett. She took second on the throw and came around to score on a single from Black for an 8-2 lead.

Giffin walked to leadoff the seventh and with one out, Cain also drew a free pass. Anderson reached on a bunt single, loading the bases, and Wadkins belted a grand slam to left, her second homer of the year, stretching the advantage to 12-2.

Huskey retired 12 of the final 14 batters of the game, allowing one baserunner in the fourth and seventh innings after Berea had six runners in the first three frames.

GAME TWO
Abby Winkler and Buckner combined to allow two unearned runs and scattered seven hits, striking out seven in the 5-2 win. Buckner (2-2) picked up the win, working 3.1 scoreless innings and giving up three hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Tackett registered two hits and three RBIs and Giffin recorded two more hits with one RBI.

Sewanee started quickly in the contest after a one-out single from Black followed by a double by Buckner. Giffin plated a run with a single to left and Cain singled up the middle, scoring another for a 2-0 lead after a half-inning.

In the fourth Madilyn Parker and Winkler both reached on errors and moved to second and third on Lucy Hensler's sac bunt. Tackett then doubled to rightcenter, plating both runners, for a 4-0 edge.

In the bottom of the inning Josie Hollingsworth drew a leadoff walk and Candice Williams reached on an infield single. Meads' short pop to the third base side of the circle was called an infield fly but dropped and the runners advanced.

Emily Searcy then grounded to third but the throw went off the glove of the first baseman and both runners came around to score. After another single, Buckner came on to pitch and Mia Lewis lined out to end the inning but not before Berea cut the Sewanee lead in half.

The Mountaineers threatened in the sixth after a single off the glove of a diving third baseman by Meads. With two outs Jessyca Searcy doubled to rightcenter, but Meads was cut down at the plate on a good relay from Hensler to Huskey to Cain, keeping the Tigers in front, 4-2.

Tackett led off the seventh with a line drive to center that got past Emily Searcy and all the way to the wall. Tackett scored on the play, just ahead of the throw, for an inside-the-park homer, stretching the advantage to 5-2.

Williams (0-7) picked up the loss for Berea, allowing five runs, three earned, on eight hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in seven innings.

Sewanee hosts Wesleyan College this Sunday for a Noon doubleheader, only the third and fourth home games of the season for the Tigers.
