Lewis’ Seven-Point Day Lifts Sewanee to Dombrowski’s 200th Sewanee Win

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Ellen Lewis tallied seven points, and Sally Whitehead added three as Sewanee's women's lacrosse team scored four unanswered goals in the fourth period to defeat Life University on Sunday afternoon, 14-11, handing head coach Michele Dombrowski her 200th win at Sewanee.

Lewis recorded five goals and two assists while adding seven draw controls, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Whitehead posted two goals and an assist to go with four caused turnovers, two ground balls, and two draw controls. Erika Bolcar, Alex Kelly, Elizabeth Mueller, and Marlin Price each finished with two points on a goal and an assist. Price also secured six draw controls, along with two caused turnovers and two ground balls.

Ella Townsend registered a game-high five caused turnovers and four ground balls, while Sofia Bean contributed three caused turnovers, five ground balls, and a goal.

Sewanee faced an early deficit as Life University scored five unanswered goals to open the first period, three coming on free-position shots. Mueller put the Tigers on the board in the final seconds of the quarter with a man-up goal off an assist from Price.

Life added another free-position goal to begin the second, this time while man-down. However, Sewanee answered two minutes later when Townsend caused a turnover and scooped up the ground ball, leading to a Bolcar goal assisted by Kelly.
Molly Starkey then forced a turnover and collected the ground ball before finding Lewis for her first goal of the day. After the Running Eagles extended their lead, Sewanee closed the half with two straight scores. Lewis caused a turnover, picked up the ground ball, and finished for her second goal, and Kelly followed with a goal off an assist from Alexa Berg to pull the Tigers within two at halftime.

The Tigers surged out of the break with three goals in just over a minute. Lewis opened the run before assisting Price on a man-up goal. Price won the ensuing draw control, and Whitehead fed Katherine Clark to give Sewanee its first lead of the afternoon.

Life responded with three consecutive goals to regain the advantage. Lewis converted a free-position attempt before Life answered with another free-position score. Kennedy Harcourt brought Sewanee back within one after Clark caused a turnover to give the Tigers possession late in the third.

Lewis connected with Whitehead to tie the game at 11 with 11:39 remaining in the final period. With 3:10 to play, Mueller found Lewis for a man-up go-ahead goal. Just seven seconds later, Whitehead added an insurance score off an assist from Bolcar. Bean capped the scoring with 40 seconds left following a caused turnover by Price and a ground ball from Lewis.

Sewanee gave up six free-position goals and were just 1-of-6 for themselves, but outshot the Running Eagles 41-16. 

Sewanee opens its home slate against Piedmont University on Feb. 28 at noon.
