Softball drops nine-inning contest, splits twinbill

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Reagan Huskey tossed a complete-game shutout in a 3-0 victory over Covenant College but Sewanee lost in nine innings to host Mississippi University for Women, splitting a doubleheader for the second straight day in softball action Saturday in Columbus, Miss.

Huskey was dominant in the opener, scattering six hits with one walk and four strikeouts in the win against Covenant. She retired nine of the first 10 batters of the game and worked out of a jam in the fourth after a pair of singles by the Scots.

Covenant loaded the bases in the fifth with two singles and a walk before a lineout to end the threat. The Scots picked up a single in the sixth and reached on an error in the seventh for their only baserunners over the last two frames.

The Tigers scored on errors in the first and fourth innings and a KK Wadkins sacrifice fly, also in the fourth, for all of the offense. Sewanee managed just two hits against Covenant's Charley Clark.

Abbie Buckner tossed 5.1 innings in the second contest, giving up one earned run on six hits with two strikeouts. MUW posted a run in the first and another in the sixth before Ansley Giffin's RBI single in the seventh knotted the game and sent it to extra innings.

Buckner plated a run with a single in the eighth inning, but Brooklyn Rhodes tied the game again with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame.

In the ninth Sewanee scored three times, with Maggie Barker and Madilyn Parker each posting RBI singles and Giffin driving home a run with a triple. The Owls answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning, including a two-run double by Chloe McClain, who scored the winning run on an error for the 7-6 MUW victory.

Giffin finished 3-for-5 with a run and two RBIs while Bucker was 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Sydney Tackett, Barker and Parker all collected two hits for the Tigers.

Sewanee's doubleheader scheduled for Sunday at Talladega College has been moved to March 5 at 2 p.m. because of rain in the forecast.
