Tigers split home opener double-header

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee Softball split a doubleheader on Friday afternoon against LaGrange College, winning the first game and dropping the second in Sewanee's home opener at Tiger Field.

Sydney Tackett hit a three-run home run in the first game, securing a 4-1 win in the opener, but the Tigers stranded 10 runners on base in the second game, falling 7-1.

LaGrange tallied a two-out triple followed by an RBI double in the top of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead.
Reagan Huskey settled in quickly inside the circle, tossing a complete-game effort while allowing just four hits and one run across seven innings with two strikeouts.

Huskey pitched a three-up, three-out inning in the top of the third with two strikeouts, and the Tigers followed their strong defensive outing with a decisive offensive frame.

KK Wadkins opened the inning with a single before Ace Anderson laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner. Abbie Buckner followed with a single down the left field line and later stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Grace Black then delivered a bunt single that brought Wadkins home and moved Buckner to third.

Sydney Tackett followed with a three-run home run to left center, giving Sewanee a 4-1 advantage.

Huskey continued to control the game, producing another three-up, three-out inning in the fourth with three consecutive groundouts. LaGrange threatened in the seventh after a leadoff double and sacrifice bunt moved the runner into scoring position, but Huskey induced back-to-back groundouts to seal the victory.

Sewanee finished the game with six hits, led by two from Grace Black and one each from Buckner, Wadkins, and Tackett.

The Panthers struck first again in game two, scoring in the opening inning after a walk and aggressive baserunning led to an RBI groundout.

Black recorded a one-out single in the bottom of the first, and Maggie Barker followed with a two-out single, but Sewanee left both runners stranded.

LaGrange added two runs in the third inning, scoring once following a defensive error and adding another on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 3-0.

Ansley Giffin entered in relief during the fourth inning and helped limit further damage, stranding two runners on base with a strikeout and a pop-out.

In the bottom half of the fourth, Sewanee loaded the bases with no outs after a walk by Giffin and singles from Abby Winkler and Christian Cain. Buckner later reached on a fielding error, allowing Giffin to score Sewanee's lone run of the contest.

LaGrange broke the game open in the fifth inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues to score four runs. The Panthers finished with seven runs on five hits, while Sewanee committed four errors in the contest.

Despite the loss, Sewanee collected eight hits in game two, including two hits from Abby Winkler and Madilyn Parker.

The Tigers head to Maryville for a doubleheader on Sunday, beginning at Noon and 2 p.m. CT/ 1 and 3 ET.
