First half goals carry Berry past Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Stokes McConnell scored for the Tigers, but Berry used two first-half goals and added another in the second half to defeat Sewanee, 3-1, in men's soccer action on Friday evening at Bob Pearson Field.

McConnell gave the Tigers an early advantage, finding the back of the net off a long ball played by Thomas McGowan just under two minutes into play, to give Sewanee an early 1-0 lead.

Berry responded with two goals in the final 20 minutes of the opening half. Joey Captain evened the score at 1-1 before Cullen Maas gave the Vikings a 2-1 lead with 9:40 remaining before halftime.

The Tigers looked to respond in the second half, putting pressure on the Berry defense. Sewanee generated several scoring opportunities, including shots from Holden Patterson, Ian Cox, Grayson White and McConnell, but Berry goalkeeper Cooper Cherry came up with the saves.

Berry added an insurance goal in the 73rd minute, as Davis Regier found the back of the net to extend the Vikings' advantage to 3-1.
