SEWANEE, Tenn. – Despite controlling possession for much of the match and a decided advantage in shots, Sewanee women's soccer was unable to find the back of the net in a scoreless draw Saturday against Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky.
The Tigers (2-0-1) posted a 12-5 edge in shots, 7-2 in shots on goal, and took eight corner kicks to none by the Pioneers.
Sewanee held possession for much of the first half, outshooting the Pioneers, 5-2, but was unable to connect in the final third for quality scoring chances. A host of crosses into the box did not find Sewanee players and the team's only shot on goal of the period came on a free kick by
Kylene Monaghan from just outside the box and was saved by Transylvania goalkeeper Carrie Stevens.
The Pioneers were more aggressive offensively in the first 20 minutes of the second period before the Tigers controlled the final 25 minutes, pressing for a goal, especially in the last 15 minutes. Shots from
Cassis Yappen,
Susie Whitsett and Monaghan were all saved by Stevens, who finished with seven saves.
Transylvania's best scoring chance came midway through the second half when Sewanee goalie
Avery Kievit did not get to a ball near the top right of the box in time and the goal was open, but a cross from the Pioneers bounced across the open net with no players near it.
The Tigers host Maryville College this Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Puett Field.
