Volleyball blanks Wesleyan, 3-0

Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. –Suna Merkler and Nicole Radford each hit above .500 with six kills apiece as Sewanee swept Wesleyan (Ga.) in straight sets Tuesday night in Juhan Gymnasium. The Tigers hit .389 as a team and limited the Wolves to a -.052 mark in the 25-7, 25-11, 25-9 victory.

Savannah Gann added seven kills, while Jane Gambel chipped in five kills on nine swings to hit .444. Anna Ellison (3), Maria Kennedy (3), and Emma Meyer (2) also contributed multiple kills, while 10 different players recorded at least one kill on the night.

The Tigers came out firing in the opening set, hitting .619 with 14 kills on 21 attempts and just one error. Sewanee opened with an 11-1 run behind three kills each from Gann and Ellison, plus strikes from Meyer and Mollie White. Wesleyan managed a short run late, but consecutive errors sealed the 25-7 win.

In the second, Sewanee jumped ahead with a Merkler kill and back-to-back aces from Charlotte Lee, who finished with a match-high four aces. The Tigers stretched their lead with another 9-1 surge, and a Wesleyan miscue ended the frame 25-11.

The third set mirrored the first two as Sewanee built another early lead while holding Wesleyan to a -.182 attack percentage. A late four-point run, fueled by an ace from Bela Cancado, a Radford kill, and two Wolves errors, clinched the match 25-9.

Defensively, Sewanee tallied 30 digs, led by Laney Barnes with five. The Tigers also recorded six team blocks, with Radford posting two block assists.

With the win, Sewanee improves to 6-4 heading into Southern Athletic Association play. The Tigers travel to Atlanta, Ga., this weekend for a conference pod hosted by Oglethorpe, facing Southwestern and Millsaps on Saturday before closing against the host Stormy Petrels on Sunday.
