SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Grayson White scored a goal and assisted on another, as Sewanee posted three goals in the final 15 minutes, overcoming another early deficit in a 3-2 victory over Covenant College in men's soccer action here Tuesday night at Puett Field.
The Tigers (5-0-2) remained unbeaten, digging out of a 2-0 hole for the second time in a week. Sewanee produced the better scoring chances throughout the match, outshooting the Scots, 22-6, overall, and found the back of the net three times in a 10-minute stretch.
Covenant took the early lead, though, with Jonathan Welsh feeding Jackson Bostrom for a goal in the 11
th minute. Then in the 16
th minute,
Harper Satterfield was called for a foul in the box and Whitt Tisdale converted the penalty kick for a 2-0 Scots advantage.
Covenant got to every 50-50 ball and won every first and set ball in the midfield for the entire first half and kept the Tigers from gaining any traction.
The second half was a different story, with Sewanee constantly playing direct, putting the Scots defense under pressure.
The Tigers finally broke through in the 77
th minute after a cross from
Stokes McConnell from near the end line into the box. It bounced off the hands of Covenant goalkeeper Eli Honeycutt and
Alpha Bah finished for the goal, cutting the deficit in half.
Tyler Scott was fouled just outside the box (like a step outside the box) in the 84
th minute and White's free kick into the wall was called a handball. White drilled the PK, knotting the match at two and sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
But Sewanee wasn't done, with White playing a ball down the rightside to
Isaac Rasheed, who crossed toward the middle and fired a left-footed blast from the corner of the box, far post, past a diving Honeycutt with only 3:16 remaining in the match.
Covenant got one last chance after a second yellow card on
Edward Kennedy gave the Scots a made advantage for the final 1:48, but they were unable to get off a shot and the final seconds ticked off, giving Sewanee the win.
Honeycutt finished with eight saves while Tigers keeper
Nathan Vanhoeve had one save.
The Tigers hit the road for the first time this season on Saturday, facing William Peace on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT and Greensboro College on Sunday at 10 a.m. CT.
