SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Grayson White posted a hat trick, the final goal in the last 30 seconds on a penalty kick, and Sewanee escaped with a 3-3 draw against Maryville College in men's soccer action here Wednesday night at Puett Field.
The Tigers (3-0-2) trailed 2-0 and 3-1 but continually attacked, creating quality chances throughout the match, but Maryville goalkeeper Christian Alvarez and the Scots defense blocked and saved numerous shots.
Maryville scored twice in the first half, in the 14
th minute on a free kick by Brady Hammer and in the 31
st minute after a Hammer shot was saved but Jonathan Case finished the rebound.
White found the back of the net less than two minutes into the second period, with
Noah Bjorkman chesting a ball down to White, whose right-footed shot to the far post hit the side net.
Sewanee goalkeeper
Nathan Vanhoeve made a mental mistake in the 51
st minute, picking up a ball played back by a defender. Hammer converted the indirect kick that was taken from near the penalty spot, extending the Scots advantage to 3-1.
White's second goal came just three minutes later after a great ball from Scott, with White left-footing a ball from near the top left corner of the box to the near post, hitting the post and caroming into the opposite side net.
Sewanee kept pressing, with a header by
Edward Kennedy saved by Alcarez in the 63
rd minute. Then with a minute remaining, White hit the right post square, but the Tigers pushed the ball back into the box and the Scots were called for a hand ball with 23 seconds to play.
White converted the PK into the left side of the net for his fifth goal of the season. Sewanee outshot the Scots, 18-9, overall, including 11-5 in the second half. Alcarez finished with six saves compared to two for Vanhoeve. The match featured 28 total fouls, five yellow cards and two red cards (one on each team) after the PK.
Maryville's defense stopped a good chance in the 10
th minute, with
Ethan Nemcek's blast from 25 yards knocked down before it reached the net. The Tigers recycled the ball and Scott's header at the back post was saved by Alcarez, a reflect save, keeping the match scoreless.
The Scots got on the board soon after, with Hammer netting a goal from a free kick in the 14
th minute. His shot from a bad angle down the left side curled around wall and just inside the near post, off the hands of Vanhoeve.
Maryville netted the second goal in the 31
st minute after a thru-ball to Hammer. Vanhoeve saved his shot just inside the box but Case was right there for a rebound into an empty net for a 2-0 Scots edge.
Sewanee hosts Talladega College this Saturday at Noon at Puett Field and faces Covenant College next Tuesday at 7 p.m. to end a seven-match homestand to start the season.
