SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Laney Kalsu and
Lily Reinhardtsen each netted goals in the first half and
Susie Whitsett and
Cara Chaffin added scores in the second period in Sewanee's 4-0 win against Farmingdale State in women's soccer action here Sunday afternoon at Puett Field.
The Tigers (2-0-0) dominated the action for the majority of the match, taking 22 total shots, 12 on goal, in a very physical match that included 28 fouls. Chaffin converted the final goal of the match on a penalty kick with exactly two minutes to play after Fiamma Del Balzo drew a foul in the box.
In the first period,
Kylene Monaghan was dragged down in the first three minutes near the box but there was no call, but she assisted on the Tigers' first goal. She took a corner kick from
Stella Martin wide and her cross found Kalsu at the back post for a tap-in goal in the 17
th minute.
Sewanee continued to pressure the Rams defense, with Reinhardtsen's shot saved by Farmingdale State's Hailey Stork and a drive from just inside the box by
Cassis Yappen was also saved by a diving Stork.
The Tigers found a second goal in the 31
st minute after
Khiana Roraback picked off an errant pass deep in the offensive zone, passing across to Reinhardtsen, who one-timed a shot past a hard-charging Stork to the far post for a 2-0 edge.
Martin nearly found the back of the net in the final minute of the half, with her driving shot from 35 yards tapped over the top of the net by Stork, who made four saves and faced 10 total shots in the period.
In the second half
Josie Alexander played a long thru-ball down the right side to Whitsett. Stork and Whitsett got to the ball about the same time but the ball bounced off and past Stork and Whitsett fired into an open net in the 75
th minute.
Cassis Yappen played a long ball down the left side to del Balzo, who drew the foul in the box that led to Chaffin's PK.
Sewanee goalkeeper collected two saves and Stork finished with eight.
Sewanee travels to Transylvania University next Saturday at 11 a.m. CT.
