Sewanee sweeps Brevard in season opener

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Savannah Gann led the Tigers with 16 kills as the Sewanee volleyball team kicked off the 2025 season with a straight-sets win over Brevard to close out day one of the Sewanee Invite in Juhan Gymnasium. The Tigers controlled the match from start to finish, taking the sets 25-17, 25-12, and 25-16. 

Gann powered the Sewanee attack with a match-high 16 kills while hitting .419, adding three service aces and a block assist for 19.5 points. Suna Merkler added seven kills and three aces, while Anna Ellison posted eight kills on a .583 hitting percentage. 

Emma Meyer directed the attack with 17 assists and seven digs, while Sophia Caruso contributed six assists, three aces, and a team-best 11 digs. Defensively, the Tigers limited Brevard to a .065 hitting percentage and recorded four blocks. 

In the opening set, both teams traded points early before a Brevard service error sparked an 11-4 Sewanee run. The Tigers closed out the set, 25-17, on another Brevard miscue. 

Brevard jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second set, but Sewanee quickly took control. Beind 15 kills and a .400 team hitting percentage, the Tigers rolled to a 25-12 win. Gann led the way with five kills in the frame, while Ellison added four. 

The third set saw the teams trade points until Sewanee broke it open with a 7-0 run fueled by five kills from Gann and an ace from Caruso. The Tigers maintained momentum and sealed the sweep with a 25-16 victory. 

Sewanee (1-0) returns to the court Saturday for two matches against Meredith and Huntingdon at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. to close out the Invitational.
