SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Sewanee volleyball team split its matches on Saturday in Juhan Gymnasium, falling in five sets to Meredith before bouncing back with a straight-sets win over Huntingdon to close out its opening weekend of play.

In the opener, the Tigers battled through five sets but came up short against Meredith, 25-20, 23-25, 25-23, 22-25, 10-15. Mollie White led the Tigers with 15 kills on a .267 hitting percentage and added three blocks, while Suna Merkler posted 11 kills, four block assists, and three service aces for 17 points. Savannah Gann contributed nine kills and a team-high five aces, and Anna Ellison added nine kills with five block assists.

Emma Meyer paced the offense with 33 assists and added 11 digs, while Sydney Bixby chipped in eight assists and two kills. On defense, Sophia Caruso anchored the back row with 13 digs, while Gann and Merkler each tallied 10.

The opening set saw both teams trade points before Sewanee surged ahead with a 9-3 run, highlighted by two kills from Merkler, to take a 21-13 lead. Meredith rallied with a 7-0 run, but the Tigers closed the set on four straight points to win 25-20. Meredith evened the match in the second set, 25-23, and after the teams split the next two frames, the Avenging Angels used a late push in the fifth to secure the victory.

Sewanee responded in the nightcap with a 25-20, 25-23, 26-24 sweep of Huntingdon. Ellison led the way with nine kills on a .438 hitting percentage and added three blocks, while White followed with eight kills at a .429 clip and three block assists. Gann and Merkler each chipped in seven kills.

Meyer directed the attack with 19 assists and three service aces, while Laney Barnes added 11 assists. Caruso once again anchored the defense with a team-high 19 digs, as the Tigers combined for 48.

Ellison set the tone in the opening set with three kills and two blocks, while Caruso collected 11 digs. In the second, Huntingdon held a 23-22 lead before back-to-back kills from Maria Kennedy and Ellison helped Sewanee close on a 3-0 run for a 25-23 win.

In the final set, Sewanee took a 23-18 lead to get within two points of the match, but Hungtingson strung together five points to tie the set at 23. Barnes registered a kill to give the Tigers a match point, but the Hawks tied the game at 24-24. Two back-to-back kills from Ellison and White secured the match and the sweep, 26-24.

With the split, Sewanee moves to 2-1 on the season and will return to action next weekend at the Covenant College Invitational, taking on LeTourneau on Friday at 5 p.m. ET/4 p.m. CT.
